Billy Joel has revealed that doctors warned him loud rock concerts were harming his brain, contributing to his diagnosis of Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus, a condition caused by a build-up of cerebrospinal fluid. The 77-year-old singer told SiriusXM's Billy Joel Channel that performing loud shows was akin to sustaining repeated concussions, prompting him to cancel all his tour dates and step back from regular live performance.

Joel said he was initially reluctant to undergo surgery for a brain shunt but changed his mind after learning it could improve his balance and memory, and he has since reported improvements in all three areas following the operation. His last full concert was on 22nd February 2025, during which he fell on stage, though he briefly returned in January this year for a two-song appearance with a Billy Joel cover band. There is no confirmed date for his full return to touring, but he has reassured fans that he remains well and has no plans to disappear from public life.
