Hackers targeted $6.34bn in crypto after months of preparation, Binance says
Binance says hackers spent months preparing a cryptocurrency theft that initially targeted $6.34 billion, the largest amount ever targeted in a crypto heist. The FBI and security firm TRM Labs attributed the attack to North Korean actors; Binance says it has frozen or intercepted $2.85 billion and set aside funds to cover the loss.
The campaign began no later than June and culminated last Thursday, when attackers compromised an engineer’s laptop and withdrew assets from several wallets. Binance described a series of techniques, including a tampered Homebrew download, fake recruitment interviews that delivered malware, compromised internal AI tooling and stolen access to a wallet signing service. The article says the attackers used that access to bypass the normal withdrawal process.
