Black Myth Devs Were Inspired by 2026’s Hottest Movie to Reject AI in Sequel’s Development

Black Myth: Wukong developer Game Science has said it will not use generative AI in the design and asset-creation phases of its upcoming sequel, Black Myth: Zhong Kui. Co-founder and art director Yan Qi announced the decision on the Chinese social media platform Weibo, framing it as a deliberate stand rather than opposition to technology itself, at a time when AI use in game development is becoming increasingly common and controversial. The move positions Game Science as one of the more prominent studios pushing back against AI-assisted production in gaming.

Qi cited film director Christopher Nolan, whose new film The Odyssey has left a strong impression on him, as inspiration, arguing that Nolan's continued use of practical effects and traditional filmmaking techniques shows creative work can still thrive without relying on the latest technology. Qi used the analogy of not needing to catch "the last train," saying the studio can afford to take its time rather than rush production. This echoes comments made in 2024 by the series' lead performance director, Beth Park, who said AI loses the "human, chaotic emotion" of artistic creation. Black Myth: Zhong Kui was announced in 2025 at Gamescom Opening Night Live, and Game Science has not yet given a release window.
