Russian drone strikes hit ships in Romanian waters and nearby Black Sea

Ars Technica ·

Suspected Russian drone attacks have struck commercial ships near Bulgaria and Romania, including a chemical tanker hit inside Romania’s territorial waters. The incidents raise concern for shipping along a vital route for Ukrainian exports and have prompted calls for greater NATO protection.

Two tankers caught fire within 24 hours on 14 and 15 October near the Sulina canal: all crew from Yara J were rescued, while seven sailors from Wine Trader remained missing after five were rescued. NATO also reported attacks on two other vessels, while earlier strikes in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone sank a cargo ship and left another crew missing. At least seven ships have now been attacked in NATO members’ exclusive economic zones; NATO says it has increased counter-drone capabilities on its eastern flank.
