Bob Mackie, the nine-time Emmy-winning costume designer celebrated as the "Sultan of Sequins" for his flamboyant creations, has died aged 87. His death was announced on his Instagram page, which described him as having "lived his 87 years to the fullest" while fulfilling his lifelong dream of working in fashion and costume design.

Over a five-decade career, Mackie designed for stars including Cher, Diana Ross, Mitzi Gaynor and Carol Burnett, earning three Oscar nominations and winning the first-ever Emmy for costume design. He worked on all 11 seasons of The Carol Burnett Show, reportedly creating more than 17,000 pieces, including his famous "curtain rod" Scarlett O'Hara parody dress. He was equally renowned for his four-decade collaboration with Cher, dressing her for The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour, concert tours and her unforgettable 1986 Oscars outfit, work for which he won two further Emmys and a Tony in 2019 for The Cher Show. He was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 2002.
