Born 86 Years Ago Today in West Texas, the Songwriter Behind Emmylou Harris’ No. 1 Hit Who Later Duetted With Tanya Tucker

Delbert McClinton, born in Lubbock, Texas, on 4 November 1940, is celebrated for a career spanning nearly seven decades across country, blues, soul and rock. Though his only solo Top 10 pop hit was “Givin’ It Up for Your Love”, the article argues that this chart record understates his influence and achievements.

McClinton played harmonica on Bruce Channel’s 1962 hit “Hey! Baby” and later gave John Lennon harmonica tips while touring Britain. Emmylou Harris took McClinton’s “Two More Bottles of Wine” to No. 1 in 1978; his 1992 duet with Tanya Tucker, “Tell Me All About It”, reached No. 4 on the country chart. He has won four Grammys, including one for his 2019 blues album, and released his latest album, *Outdated Emotion*, in 2022.
