Scottish para-bowler Mary Stevenson has died aged 73, only two months after winning gold at Glasgow 2026. Her success, achieved with Robert Barr, Sarah Jane Ewing and Jim Aitken, made her Scotland’s oldest female Commonwealth Games gold medallist and earned her the nickname “Mary Queen of Shots”.

A retired chauffeur from Paisley, Stevenson began playing bowls in 2013 at 61 and continued after losing her sight by joining the Blind Bowlers. Bowls Scotland and Team Scotland praised her determination, kindness and contribution, noting that she had competed for Scotland as recently as the previous weekend.
