Ridley Scott's post-apocalyptic thriller "The Dog Stars" opened disastrously with just $8 million domestically, marking one of the director's biggest box office misfires and continuing a mixed summer for Disney despite hits like "Toy Story 5" and "The Devil Wears Prada 2". Meanwhile, "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" held the top spot for a fifth consecutive weekend, edging closer to becoming the highest-grossing film ever at the North American box office.

"The Dog Stars", which cost over $80 million to make and stars Jacob Elordi, managed only a fifth-place finish and was poorly received, scoring 40% on Rotten Tomatoes and a "C+" CinemaScore. "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" earned $22.2 million, pushing its domestic total to $891 million and putting it on track to surpass "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" as the top domestic earner before potentially becoming the first film to reach $1 billion in North America alone. Elsewhere, "Coyote vs. Acme" opened in third with $13.5 million, Universal's "The Odyssey" took second with $14.6 million in its seventh weekend (a $564 million total), and "Insidious: Out of the Further" placed fourth with $10.1 million.
