Bolsover has Britain’s highest relationship rate, while Brent has the lowest

Daily Mail ·

Researchers have mapped relationship rates across Great Britain, finding that location is linked to how common being single or partnered is. Their analysis also suggests that the life-satisfaction gap between people in relationships and single people is wider in places where couples are more prevalent, highlighting how local norms may shape people’s experiences.

The team surveyed 382,000 people across 379 regions. Bolsover in Derbyshire had the highest relationship rate, at 80.2 per cent, while Brent had the lowest, at 54.8 per cent; major cities including London, Liverpool, Edinburgh and Aberdeen generally had lower rates than surrounding areas. The pattern remained after accounting for factors such as age, health, income, employment and personality, though the researchers described the effect as modest.

Relationship rates describe the share of people who are partnered rather than single. They vary between places, and researchers have compared regions across Great Britain to see how those differences relate to people’s lives.

Bolsover is a district in Derbyshire, while Brent is a borough in north-west London. The study surveyed people in hundreds of regions and considered factors such as age, health and income when comparing relationship rates.

The researchers also examined life satisfaction among partnered and single people. Their findings suggest that the difference between the groups varies by place, which may help explain how local social patterns shape people’s experiences.
