Tim Curry, the English actor whose screen and stage work ranged from cult musicals to horror, comedy and fantasy, has died aged 80, according to several reports. His manager was cited as confirming that he died at his Los Angeles home, although no cause of death was given. Reports said Curry had lived with major mobility difficulties after a stroke in 2012.
Curry became internationally recognised as Dr Frank-N-Furter, first in Richard O’Brien’s stage musical The Rocky Horror Show and then in its 1975 film adaptation, The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The role became central to the film’s long afterlife as a cult favourite. He later appeared in films including Annie, Legend, Clue, Home Alone 2, The Hunt for Red October, Muppet Treasure Island and Congo, while also building an extensive theatre career.
His most widely remembered television work included Pennywise in the 1990 adaptation of Stephen King’s It. Curry also continued working in voice acting and occasional public appearances after his stroke, with credits including Star Wars: The Clone Wars and the game Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3. On stage, he played King Arthur in Spamalot in Chicago, on Broadway and in the West End.
Born Timothy James Curry in Cheshire in 1946, he spent part of his childhood in Plymouth and studied English and drama at the University of Birmingham, according to one account. His early theatre work included Hair, where he met O’Brien.
