British doctor with Ebola receives specialist care at London’s Royal Free
A British doctor who contracted Ebola while helping the response to an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has been evacuated to the UK for specialist care. They are being treated at the Royal Free hospital in London, and health officials say the risk to the wider public remains low.
The doctor is the first British national to contract Ebola in the current outbreak, which has exceeded 10,000 cases and 5,000 deaths and spread to Kenya, Uganda and Nigeria. The Royal Free’s high-level isolation unit uses strict infection controls and protective equipment; there have been only four confirmed Ebola cases in the UK previously.
