Shameless murderer writes ‘not guilty’ on prison jumpsuit and makes such spectacle of himself at sentencing that judge ejects him from court
Dojuan Nettles, convicted of murdering Cleveland Institute of Art student Brandon Cartellone, was sentenced to life in prison in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. He repeatedly interrupted the judge, declared himself innocent and displayed “NOT GUILTY” on his prison jumpsuit, prompting the judge to have him removed from court.
Cartellone, 21, was found dead in his off-campus apartment in July 2011; prosecutors said he had been bound, beaten and robbed, and the medical examiner reported strangulation as the cause of death. Nettles, 41, was arrested in Florida in July 2025 after DNA evidence linked him to the case, and a judge cited his palm print on duct tape used to bind Cartellone. Co-defendant Dionte Davis was cleared by a jury in October.
In short
- Dojuan Nettles received a life sentence for Cartellone’s murder.
- He was ejected from court after repeated interruptions.
