Explained simply
The British Independent Film Awards, known as the BIFAs, recognise work across British independent cinema, including performances, directing and technical crafts. They also have an international film category, which brings films from outside the UK into the awards.
The nominations cover films made by established directors and first-time feature filmmakers. Andrew Scott stars in Simon Stone’s Elsinore, while Animol is the debut feature from actor and director Ashley Walters; Clio Barnard directed I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning.
The awards offer a snapshot of which films and film-makers are attracting attention in independent cinema. Craft categories recognise work such as cinematography, editing and sound, alongside the better-known acting and directing awards.
