Randy Villegas unseats David Valadao in California’s 22nd district
Progressive Democrat Randy Villegas has defeated six-term Republican incumbent David Valadao in California’s 22nd congressional district. The result gives Democrats a seat in a district redrawn under Proposition 50, and marks a win in a contest regarded as California’s only genuine toss-up.
The district runs from Bakersfield to west of Fresno and is among the country’s poorest, with healthcare and rising costs prominent concerns for residents. It has the second-highest rate and number of Medicaid enrollees of any congressional district; Villegas criticised Valadao for backing federal health programme cuts. Valadao reported $1.7 million in cash on hand and received more than twice the average House candidate’s PAC funding, while Villegas pledged to reject corporate donations and won endorsements from Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Dolores Huerta.
In short
- Randy Villegas defeated Republican incumbent David Valadao.
- The redrawn California district was the state’s only true toss-up.
- Healthcare costs and campaign financing were key issues.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
Villegas’s win can be seen as a mandate for stronger protection of healthcare and affordability in a district where many residents rely on Medicaid and face rising costs. His pledge to reject corporate donations and support from progressive figures may also appeal to voters seeking a representative less reliant on established political and business interests.
The case against
Valadao’s supporters could argue that his experience as a six-term representative offered continuity and knowledge of the district, while backing federal programme changes may reflect a view that public spending should be restrained or redesigned for long-term sustainability. They may also see the result as shaped by the redrawn district and a close contest, rather than a broad rejection of his approach.
