Can Alcaraz’s ex-coach help Shelton challenge his former protege?
Juan Carlos Ferrero, who coached Carlos Alcaraz to six Grand Slam titles, is joining Ben Shelton’s team to help the American challenge the sport’s leading players. Shelton brings considerable power and athleticism, but the partnership is intended to improve his consistency, tactics and composure in key moments.
The world number four reached his first Grand Slam final at the US Open this year, where he lost to Alexander Zverev, despite having beaten Alcaraz in the quarter-finals. Shelton has won seven ATP singles titles, including two Canadian Open Masters 1000 crowns, but a recent loss to world number 222 Jérôme Kym highlighted his uneven results. Ferrero is expected to work at 10 to 12 tournaments next season, including all four Grand Slams, alongside Shelton’s father and current coach, Bryan.
In short
- Ferrero joins Shelton’s coaching team.
