Capcom’s Samurai Fantasy Reboot Officially Nears Franchise Record After Just 1 Day

Collider · 2 hours ago

Capcom's samurai action franchise Onimusha has returned in triumphant fashion, with new instalment Way of the Sword selling 1 million copies on its launch day alone. Released on 4 September, the game marks the series' first entry in 20 years, since Dawn of Dreams on PlayStation 2, and its rapid sales suggest the reboot has struck a chord with both newcomers and long-time fans. The result caps a strong run for Capcom in 2026, following the record-breaking success of Resident Evil: Requiem and the promising debut of new IP Pragmata.

Way of the Sword casts players as swordsman Miyamoto Musashi battling demons in a corrupted Edo-period Kyoto, and has earned strong reviews, sitting at 85 on Metacritic with an 8.7 user score, alongside a peak of over 85,000 concurrent players on Steam. Its launch-day haul puts it nearly halfway to matching the series' previous bestseller, Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny, which sold 2.1 million copies in total, in a single day. The milestone has also pushed the Onimusha franchise's lifetime sales past 10 million copies since it began in 2001.
