CCTV reveals chilling final moments before Aussie was mysteriously found dead inside the bathroom of his Bali immigration detention cell

Daily Mail · 3 hours ago

An Australian man, Cameron Hughes, was found unresponsive in the bathroom of an immigration detention cell in Bali after being taken into custody over an alleged visa breach. Indonesian officials said CCTV showed him lying motionless for some time before staff gave first aid and called an ambulance, but he died on the way to hospital. The case matters because it has raised questions about the treatment and monitoring of detainees, and because his family say they still lack a clear account of what happened.

Hughes, 39, was a Perth man who had reportedly lived in Bali for more than 15 years and ran a car restoration business in Jimbaran. He was detained on Friday, 10 July, pending deportation proceedings, and immigration authorities said a preliminary medical assessment suggested cardiac arrest. His family said he had recently separated from his Indonesian wife, was trying to sort out his visa so he could remain close to their eight-year-old son, and had received conflicting information about the circumstances of his death. Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it was providing consular assistance.
