ChatGPT adds iCloud Mail and Calendar tools across platforms

Engadget ·

OpenAI has added iCloud Mail and iCloud Calendar plugins to ChatGPT, allowing users to search and manage emails, check events and update calendar entries with prompts. The tools extend ChatGPT’s connections to Apple services and are available across web, desktop and iOS, including on free plans.

Users must sign in with an Apple account and create an app-specific password to enable either plugin. They only access mail and events associated with iCloud, and Pro subscribers can also use them with OpenAI’s Dot agent. The launch comes amid a mixed relationship between Apple and OpenAI, which have collaborated on some features while also facing public disputes and competition.

In short

  • ChatGPT can search iCloud Mail and manage Calendar events.
  • The plugins are available on all plans across web, desktop and iOS.
  • Users need an Apple account and an app-specific password.

Steelman: both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

Adding iCloud tools could make routine tasks such as finding messages and updating appointments quicker, while giving users more ways to work across services they already use. Requiring users to connect their own Apple account and limiting access to iCloud data may offer a practical balance between convenience and control.

The case against

Connecting email and calendar data to an AI assistant creates privacy and security concerns, even when access is limited to those services and users must enable it themselves. Users may also prefer to handle sensitive messages and appointments directly in Apple’s apps, and may question whether the convenience justifies the extra account setup and reliance on another company’s systems.
