Chelsea nearing £16.3m deal for Rayo defender Chavarria

BBC Sport · 5 hours ago

Chelsea has substantially progressed towards acquiring Spanish left-back Pep Chavarria from La Liga side Rayo Vallecano in a transaction valued at approximately £16.3m plus performance incentives. Negotiations, which commenced at the end of June with an initial £15m proposal that was declined, became protracted over several weeks with Rayo's asking price varying substantially throughout discussions. The 28-year-old defender, who joined Rayo from Real Zaragoza in 2022, signalled his preference to move to Stamford Bridge and personal terms have already been finalised.

Manager Xabi Alonso, who previously encountered Chavarria whilst managing Real Madrid, views the signing as essential to implementing the wing-back formation that delivered Bayer Leverkusen's Bundesliga championship. The arrival follows the £47m recruitment of right-back Marco Palestra from Atalanta and addresses the defensive void created by Marc Cucurella's £51.8m transfer to Real Madrid. This completes a substantial summer transfer window that has also included the record acquisition of forward Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa alongside experienced signings in striker Danny Welbeck and midfielder Jordan Henderson.
