Paramount has released the first trailer for Children of Blood and Bone, its film adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi's best-selling fantasy novel, and it has drawn immediate comparisons to Avatar: The Last Airbender, particularly the long-fantasised romance between Zuko and Katara. The trailer showcases a prince torn between loyalty to his tyrannical father and growing affection for the magical heroine he was sent to hunt down, a dynamic many fans have wished for since Avatar concluded nearly two decades ago. The comparison matters because it signals how the film is being marketed, tapping into an enduring fan fantasy while also standing as a distinct, Yoruba-influenced West African fantasy epic in its own right.

Set in the kingdom of Orïsha, the story follows Zélie (Thuso Mbedu), a young woman who reawakens dormant magical powers after training under Mama Agba (Viola Davis), while Prince Inan (Damson Idris) is dispatched by his father, King Saran (Chiwetel Ejiofor), to eliminate magic users he considers a "festering disease". A pivotal moonlit scene shows Inan and Zélie growing close before fighting side by side, suggesting a romance rather than the platonic rivalry-turned-friendship seen in Avatar.
