China’s Pingyao Film Festival Sets 10th Edition Dates – Global Bulletin
The Pingyao International Film Festival in China will hold its 10th edition from 24–30 September at the Pingyao Festival Palace in Shanxi Province, according to a Variety global film festival bulletin that also rounds up news from festivals in India and Singapore. Founded in 2017 by director Jia Zhangke, Pingyao has become a notable launchpad for emerging filmmakers, with past editions featuring early work from directors such as Chloé Zhao, Wei Shujun and Liu Jian.
The festival runs four strands: Screening, Market, Cultivation and Academics. Its Screening programme includes Crouching Tigers for debut-to-third features by emerging directors, Hidden Dragons for Chinese-language filmmakers at a similar stage, and Galas for major works and prizewinners; entries compete for the Roberto Rossellini Awards and Fei Mu Awards, the latter offering RMB1 million ($140,000) for Best Film and RMB200,000 ($28,000) for Best Director. The bulletin also notes India's new People's International Film Festival of India, set for 17–20 December in Bhopal, and a Singapore-based touring programme marking 70 years of Taiwanese "Taiyupian" cinema, running 4–6 September.
