A by-election in Clacton-on-Sea initiated by Nigel Farage has attracted a record-breaking 34 candidates, vastly exceeding the previous parliamentary by-election record. Farage, the Reform UK leader, framed the contest as a populist challenge to the political establishment, but Labour, the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats, the Greens, and Restore Britain have all declined to participate. Critics including Yvette Cooper have characterised the election as a 'political tantrum' and a deliberate distraction from allegations surrounding Farage's financial affairs and supporters.

The resulting candidate field includes comedian Count Binface, actor Laurence Fox of the Reclaim Party, three candidates from the Official Monster Raving Loony Party, and numerous independents—creating a far more eclectic contest than Farage had envisioned. Nearly 80,000 eligible voters across 51 polling stations will cast ballots on 13 August, choosing from an unusually diverse array of contenders that transforms the election into something considerably removed from the binary clash Farage had originally sought.
