‘Completely inappropriate’ plan to turn part of picturesque historic California city beloved by Dolly Parton into a ‘TRAILER PARK’ has residents up in arms

Residents of Solvang, a historic Danish-style town in California’s Santa Ynez Valley, have objected to plans for an Airstream-based “glamping” resort on a former lumberyard site. Critics say the proposal resembles a trailer park and clashes with the town’s distinctive architecture, wineries and tourist appeal, raising concerns that it could alter Solvang’s character.

The proposed development at 1783 and 1793 Mission Drive includes several Airstream accommodation units, two hotel suites, a guest centre, swimming pool, toilets, showers and a lookout tower. The city’s Design Review Committee considered the scheme last week, and the developer’s representative said a revised plan would seek a better balance; it must undergo a second pre-application review before a development permit can be sought.

  • Solvang residents oppose an Airstream glamping resort.
  • Critics say it conflicts with the town’s Danish character.
  • Developers will submit a revised proposal for review.
