Continuity, chaos and Rodman: how Washington Spirit are thriving in NWSL

The Guardian · 3 hours ago

Washington Spirit have established themselves as one of the National Women's Soccer League's most consistent top performers, sitting among the top two teams for a third consecutive season despite the notoriously unpredictable nature of the competition. The club's success is notable because it has come amid significant squad turnover, including the departure of former Rookie of the Year Croix Bethune to rival side Kansas City Current and the absence of two key starters from last season's championship run due to maternity leave, suggesting a strong organisational foundation rather than reliance on individual players.

The NWSL is just past the midpoint of its 14th regular season, with 12 of 30 games remaining and several teams holding games in hand. Gotham FC, one of only three sides to beat Washington this season, overtook them at the top of the table on Sunday, while other clubs such as San Diego, Kansas City and Orlando have also become regular playoff contenders. Spirit president of soccer operations Haley Carter, who previously helped lead Orlando Pride to the 2024 championship, credited careful recruitment focused on cultural fit, alongside the integration of international talent from a wide range of countries, for the club's sustained form.
