Crawley signs Kent extension after losing England deal

BBC Sport ·

Zak Crawley has signed a one-year extension with Kent, keeping him at the county for an 11th season after the England and Wales Cricket Board did not renew his central contract. The deal comes as his international future is uncertain: he has not played a Test since the final match of last winter’s Ashes tour and last represented England in a one-day international in January.

Crawley played 12 County Championship matches this season as Kent won promotion back to Division One, scoring 608 runs, including four half-centuries and a top score of 89. He has made more than 180 appearances for his home county since his 2017 debut, and has played 64 Tests and nine ODIs for England. Kent’s director of cricket said Crawley’s experience and support for younger batters would benefit the team.

  • Crawley will stay with Kent for another season.
  • The extension follows the end of his England central contract.
  • He helped Kent earn promotion with 608 Championship runs.

County cricket is played between England’s 18 professional county teams, with the County Championship as its main first-class competition. Kent, based in south-east England, won promotion back to the top division this season. Zak Crawley, an opening batter, has played for the county since making his debut in 2017.

Crawley has also represented England in Test and one-day international cricket. Central contracts are agreements through which the England and Wales Cricket Board employs some players for international cricket; players without one may still be selected. His county career and international career are separate, though performances for Kent can form part of the picture when England selectors consider players.
