Cursor capitalizes on Github frustration, launches rival hosting platform
Cursor, the AI coding startup now part of SpaceXAI, has launched Origin, a new code hosting platform that lets developers collaborate on codebases, browse and edit code, manage pull requests and store repositories — functions traditionally handled by GitHub. The launch comes as GitHub, long the default choice for developers, has faced repeated outages and performance problems, giving Cursor an opening to position itself as an alternative rather than a replacement, since Origin is designed to work alongside GitHub rather than force users to migrate away from it.
Origin allows developers to sync existing GitHub repositories into Cursor's platform while keeping both in use simultaneously, and the company says "agent native" features and a broader app ecosystem are planned, though details remain limited. The timing is notable: GitHub suffered a worldwide outage lasting over six hours on the very day Origin launched, with error rates reaching nearly 20%, and an analysis by LeadDev found the platform has experienced 257 outages over the past year, prompting some high-profile users to leave. Even so, GitHub remains dominant, with roughly 180 million developers using it as of last October, meaning Cursor faces a significant challenge in competing with the 2007-founded, Microsoft-owned platform.

The case for
Supporters of Cursor's move argue that genuine competition is healthy for developers, who have grown frustrated with GitHub's slow pace of innovation, its tightening integration with Microsoft's broader ecosystem, and pricing or policy decisions made with limited input from the community. A challenger built by a team steeped in AI-assisted coding, they argue, is well placed to design workflows, tooling and pricing that better serve modern development practices, and the mere presence of a credible alternative should pressure the incumbent to improve.
The case against
Sceptics counter that GitHub's dominance rests on genuine strengths built over more than a decade: proven reliability, mature security practices, and an enormous web of integrations, CI/CD pipelines and community tooling that a new entrant cannot easily replicate. They would argue that fragmenting where code lives creates real friction for teams and open-source contributors, that trusting a young company with sensitive source code and infrastructure carries risk, and that Cursor may be better served focusing on its core editor rather than taking on the complexity of hosting.
