A Florida father was fatally shot on Tuesday morning after stopping to intervene in a violent domestic dispute between a couple, just hours after dropping his 10-year-old daughter off for her first day of school. Daryl Hill, 56, was cycling home near Plymouth Sorrento and West Ponkan roads in Apopka when he came across the altercation and tried to separate the pair, only to be chased down and shot as he fled. Police described him as an innocent bystander who was "simply trying to help someone who appeared to be in distress," while his wife of 17 years called him a hero.

According to an arrest affidavit, Hill stumbled on the scene after a pickup truck crashed into an SUV, and intervened when 26-year-old Raul Lionel Vazquez was allegedly yelling at a woman. A physical struggle followed before Hill ran off with his hands raised, shouting for help, when Vazquez allegedly retrieved a shotgun from his truck and shot him. Vazquez has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder. Hill's wife, Suzanne, said she had been tracking his location by phone and grew concerned when it stopped moving for an hour, later discovering the crime scene near their home.
