Aronofsky’s Primordial Soup seeks funding amid Hollywood’s AI push
Developing story first seen 3 hours ago
New details have emerged about Darren Aronofsky's AI film studio Primordial Soup, including its place within a wider Hollywood shift towards artificial intelligence, with Martin Scorsese using AI for storyboarding and a former Doctor Who director developing an animated AI feature, while A24 and Lionsgate have struck their own AI partnerships. Aronofsky, best known for The Whale and Black Swan, has form as an early technology adopter, having produced the VR project Spheres in 2018 and Postcard from Earth for the Las Vegas Sphere venue, before founding Primordial Soup roughly a year ago under the tagline "make soup not slop."
The studio, which lists Aronofsky and producing partner Dylan Golden as executive officers, filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission this month seeking a $15 million equity raise, having already sold just over $11 million since 1 July; how the money will be spent remains unclear, though job listings point to expansion including a "Head of Studio" role overseeing film, TV, creator content and branded work. Through a non-exclusive partnership with Google DeepMind, Aronofsky produced the featurette Ancestra, while his more recent live-action series On This Day, featuring AI-generated historical figures, drew heavy criticism for its "uncanny valley" look; he has since pivoted to an animated approach, releasing an anime-style episode depicting Thomas Jefferson boxing King George III.
