David Bowie’s Immersive ‘Stage’ Concert Experience: Director Brett Morgen on the Show, the Artist and the Archive (EXCLUSIVE)

Variety ·

Brett Morgen is creating “Stage”, an immersive concert experience built from restored footage of David Bowie’s 1978 tour. It will premiere at Berlin’s Uber Arena on 14 February 2027, offering fans rare access to performances from a period for which full concert footage has been largely unavailable.

The tour featured songs from Bowie’s “Low” and “Heroes” alongside hits including “Fame”, “The Jean Genie” and “Rebel Rebel”, as well as material from “Ziggy Stardust”. Morgen says Bowie appeared without one of his familiar stage characters, and describes the performance as unusually engaged and joyful. The production will use multiple arena screens, immersive sound and an elaborate light show.

Explained simply

David Bowie was a British singer and songwriter who became known for changing his musical style and stage image. In 1978, he toured with songs from his albums Low and “Heroes”, as well as earlier hits and material associated with his character Ziggy Stardust.

Brett Morgen is a filmmaker making an immersive concert experience from restored footage of that tour. The project draws on an archive of recordings from a period when complete footage of Bowie’s concerts has been hard to find.

The experience is designed for an arena, with large screens, sound and lighting placing the audience around the concert footage. It offers a way to encounter a particular part of Bowie’s live career beyond the recordings and photographs more widely available.
