DEF CON organisers have banned "Meta-style glasses with recording capabilities" from the 2026 conference in Las Vegas, with no exceptions for attendees who use them as prescription eyewear. The move reflects growing unease across the events industry about camera-equipped smart glasses, which can discreetly film or photograph people without their consent, and follows praise from the Electronic Frontier Foundation's Eva Galperin for the policy.

DEF CON's photo policy, unchanged since 2023, already required consent before photographing anyone other than on-stage speakers, but the explicit ban targets devices like Meta's Ray-Ban and Oakley smart glasses, developed with EssilorLuxottica. Similar restrictions have recently been introduced elsewhere: Monopoly Events banned recording glasses from its shows, including UK Comic Cons, after talent and attendees raised privacy concerns, threatening exclusion and forfeiture of purchases for violators, while Scottish ferry operator CalMac suspended unplanned bridge visits after a passenger filmed with such glasses during a crossing in June.
