Democratic rising star Ossoff projected to hold Georgia seat

Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff is projected to have won re-election in Georgia, defeating Republican challenger Mike Collins. The result strengthens Democratic control in a closely contested state and could offer an early indication of how the midterm elections are going for the party.

Ossoff made the cost of living a central campaign issue, criticising Collins for supporting Donald Trump’s tariffs and policies. Georgia voted for Trump in 2024, after narrowly backing Joe Biden in 2020; Republicans had hoped to make the Senate race more competitive, but shifted resources elsewhere as polls showed Ossoff ahead. He has dismissed speculation about a 2028 presidential bid.
