Director of Marvel’s Wolverine Responds After Extended Gameplay Footage Sparks Backlash

IGN · 4 hours ago

Mike Daly, director of Insomniac's upcoming PS5 exclusive Marvel's Wolverine, has responded to online criticism following an extended gameplay showcase this week. The footage, which revealed story beats, combat, traversal and a boss fight against a Sentinel, prompted widespread mockery on social media, but Daly said the studio is unbothered and views such reactions as an expected part of adapting a beloved character.

Fans took particular issue with a red scent trail used to track a villain (likened to the divisive "yellow paint" guidance mechanic seen in other games), stilted voice acting during a Wolverine-Sabertooth confrontation, and a Sentinel boss fight compared unfavourably to 2007's Ben 10: Protector of Earth and 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Speaking to TheGamer, Daly said Insomniac is "pretty used to" this kind of backlash and called it "a good problem to have," insisting the team focused on making the best game for the character rather than chasing fan approval. IGN's own hands-on impressions were largely positive, praising the combat while noting it remains unclear whether it will hold up over a full campaign. Marvel's Wolverine launches exclusively on PS5 on 15 September 2026.
