Disney owns film studios like Pixar and Marvel that produce content, and separately operates a consumer products division that creates merchandise based on that content. The company also runs theme parks and retail stores where it sells merchandise. These divisions are being reorganized so that entertainment studios work more closely with consumer products.
Cathleen Taff, a 30-year Disney veteran, is being promoted to oversee both the film studios and the consumer products licensing business. Lisa Baldzicki, a retail executive, will separately oversee merchandise sold through Disney's theme parks, its physical stores and online shop.
The restructuring reflects Disney's belief that filmmakers and merchandise strategists should be in closer collaboration when deciding which projects to pursue. The company is keeping parks retail operations separate, recognising that selling to theme park visitors requires different strategies than selling through standalone stores or online channels.
