Dr Vincent Brown has become the first person in the UK to be charged over Rwanda’s 1994 genocide. He denies allegations that he helped kill or encourage the deaths of Tutsi civilians, in a case arising from a seven-year British investigation and highlighting efforts to prevent the UK becoming a refuge for alleged war criminals.

Brown, 65, faces one charge linked to genocide and six relating to murder as a crime against humanity, concerning alleged killings in Kigali’s Rugenge district between 6 and 13 April 1994. Six people, including three members of one household, a taxi driver, a mother and her son, are named as alleged victims; the case will next be heard at the Old Bailey on 9 October, while a bail application is pending.
