UK insurers launch cover for accidents involving domestic robots

The Register ·

UK insurer Adrian Flux and Tokio Marine HCC are launching a home insurance policy for domestic humanoid robots, covering mishaps as the machines begin to move towards consumers. The policy aims to clarify who is responsible when a robot malfunctions, damages property or injures someone.

It covers damage to or theft of the robot, harm it causes to homes or belongings, personal liability, and emergency recovery or safe disabling after an unforeseen fault. The firms expect domestic robots to appear in UK homes from 2027; early US models cost about $20,000. Adrian Flux says the cover will evolve as the technology and risks change.

In short

  • UK insurers are preparing cover for household humanoid robots.
  • Protection includes robot theft, damage and liability.
