Learjet debris pierced a Florida home before fatal crash
A piece believed to have come from a Learjet crashed through the roof of a Florida home shortly before the aircraft plunged to the ground and killed all nine people on board. The debris, found less than a mile from the crash site, has been collected as evidence as investigators examine whether the plane was breaking apart in flight.
The NTSB says severe weather may have been a significant factor. The pilots had requested to climb 2,000 feet after encountering a thunderstorm; the co-pilot also reported ice, severe turbulence and altitude swings of more than 700 feet. Investigators recovered three pieces of the jet’s left elevator up to four miles from the crash site, while another resident believes he found part of its tail.
