The Egyptian Football Association has publicly questioned the "fairness" of the national team's 3-2 defeat to Argentina in their World Cup last-16 tie in Atlanta on Tuesday, issuing a statement strongly critical of the officiating. The FA said the refereeing decisions and the "failure to make appropriate use" of the video assistant referee system had "raised serious concerns" over the consistency and fairness of calls that shaped the game. The intervention backs manager Hossam Hassan, who claimed his side had "suffered injustice" and that Egypt were the better team and deserved to qualify.

Egypt led 1-0 through Yasser Ibrahim and thought they had gone 2-0 up when Mostafa Ziko scored, only for referee François Letexier to disallow it for a foul by Marwan Attia in the buildup. Ziko did make it 2-0 on 67 minutes before Cristian Romero and Lionel Messi levelled at 2-2, and Egypt were then denied a penalty for Julián Alvarez's injury-time challenge on Mohamed Salah moments before Enzo Fernández scored the winner. Despite the disappointment, Egypt leave the tournament having recorded their first World Cup win, first progression from the group stage and first knockout win, while Argentina advance to face Switzerland in the quarter-finals.

  • Egyptian FA questions fairness of 3-2 World Cup loss to Argentina.
  • Disallowed goal and denied injury-time penalty fuelled the anger.
  • Egypt exit after a historic first knockout run.
