‘Elf Unwrapped’ Co-Authors Andy Richter and Aaron Karo On “How Close” ‘Elf’ Was To “Not Being Made”: “Nobody Was A Sure Bet”
Andy Richter and Aaron Karo’s new book, *Elf Unwrapped*, recounts how the 2003 Christmas comedy came close to not being made. The oral history gathers memories from cast and crew, including Will Ferrell, Zooey Deschanel and director Jon Favreau, offering a look at the uncertainty behind a film that later became a holiday favourite.
The book was published on 3 November, as *Elf* approaches its 23rd anniversary. Richter arranged many of the interviews, drawing on his podcast experience; Karo said the project came from editor Carrie Thornton. The authors noted that some contributors had limited recollections of events from more than two decades ago, including uncertainty over whether Judd Apatow worked on the film.
In short
- *Elf* nearly failed to get made.
