Engelbert Humperdinck says he tied up a nurse during tuberculosis sanatorium stay after painful treatment
Engelbert Humperdinck has recalled tying up a nurse during his 1961 stay at a tuberculosis sanatorium in Leicester. He said he acted after repeated injections left him in pain and bruised, and the incident eventually led to a male nurse taking over his treatment.
The singer spent six months at Groby Road Hospital Sanatorium after coughing up blood during a concert in Manchester. He said he was initially told he had a throat infection, but his mother insisted on an X-ray, which revealed tuberculosis; he later recalled being told he had been close to death. Humperdinck, born Arnold George Dorsey, had his musical breakthrough with “Release Me” in 1967.
