Ten Hag has added that Ronaldo failed to complete a post-match run after Manchester United’s 4-0 defeat by Brentford, as he explains why he believed the forward let the team down. The former manager says he confronted Ronaldo and urged him to get into the penalty area, while acknowledging his place among football’s greatest players.

Their relationship had already deteriorated after Ronaldo refused to come on against Tottenham in October 2022 and later criticised the club in a televised interview; his contract was ended by mutual agreement the following month. Ten Hag also says United’s owners broke promises of loyalty, backing and communication, and that he was embarrassed when Scott McTominay was sold to Napoli against his wishes. He was sacked in October 2024, five months after winning the FA Cup and signing a contract extension.
