European Film Producers Say Oscar Contender ‘La Bola Negra’ Shows Taking Big Risks Can Pay Off
European film and television producers say taking creative risks can help films stand out as global streamers pursue mainstream audiences. At a MIA Market panel, they cited Spanish film *La Bola Negra* as evidence that a story commissioners might consider difficult to finance can still find audiences and awards recognition.
The film, directed by Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo and starring Glenn Close and Penélope Cruz, explores queer love and the Spanish Civil War. Netflix acquired it after Cannes and plans a US cinema release from 16 October, followed by streaming on 2 December. Producers also pointed to Spanish tax breaks and subsidies, and falling broadcaster licence fees, as factors shaping how independent films are financed.
