European football: Inter start title defence with rout of promoted Monza
Inter Milan began their Serie A title defence with a convincing 4-1 home victory over promoted Monza, recovering from a spell of complacency after Monza levelled before half-time. The result gives Cristian Chivu’s champions an assured opening win, while John Stones made his Inter debut.
Hakan Çalhanoğlu scored after six minutes, but Gustavo Varela equalised before the interval; Piotr Zieliński restored Inter’s lead three minutes into the second half, before Pio Esposito and Yann Bisseck completed the scoring. Elsewhere, Udinese drew 1-1 with Como, while Lens opened their Ligue 1 campaign by beating Auxerre 5-2, with Florian Thauvin scoring two penalties.
