‘Extreme Optimist’ Lil Jon Says Ex-Wife’s ‘Pessimism’ and Constant ‘Walking on Eggshells’ Led to Divorce
Lil Jon says persistent tension and opposing outlooks contributed to his decision to end his 18-year marriage to Nicole Smith. Speaking on the Angie Martinez IRL podcast, he described himself as an “extreme optimist” and his ex-wife as an “extreme pessimist”, and said he felt he was “walking on eggshells”.
In his memoir, *I Only Shout So You Can Hear Me*, Jon says his touring schedule may have prolonged a marriage that might otherwise have ended sooner. He also reflected on having angry thoughts during the divorce and said he needed to consider Smith’s feelings; he later adopted daily affirmations and meditation, which informed his 2024 guided meditation album. The former couple’s son Nathan died in an accidental drowning in February, aged 27.
