FAA to modernise safety information systems at 435 facilities
The Federal Aviation Administration plans to replace floppy disk based systems used to deliver weather and other safety information to air traffic controllers. The upgrade is intended to help controllers access and share critical alerts more quickly, addressing concerns about distributing pilot weather reports and Notices to Airmen.
The new Enterprise Information Display System will replace several older systems, some dating to the 1980s and one still running MS-DOS. Installation is planned at 435 facilities, beginning at sites including Atlantic City, Nashville and Rochester, with completion expected by the end of 2028. The project has been under development for more than six years and forms part of the FAA’s wider NextGen modernisation programme.
