Nepalese mountaineer Nirmal Purja, 43, has been confirmed among ten climbers killed after an avalanche struck Broad Peak, the world's twelfth-highest mountain, in Pakistan. Purja was widely known as the subject of the 2021 Netflix documentary "14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible", which documented his record-breaking ascent of all fourteen of the world's 8,000-metre peaks in under seven months, and his death marks a significant loss for the international mountaineering community.

The avalanche hit the 26,414-foot peak on Thursday, with the deaths of Purja and nine fellow climbers confirmed on Saturday. The tragedy comes amid a particularly deadly stretch for mountaineers worldwide, with search and recovery operations also continuing for climbers caught in a separate fatal avalanche near Castle Peak in California around the same time, where eight skiers have been confirmed dead and one remains missing.
