AO3 outage could last up to four weeks as investigation continues
Archive of Our Own (AO3), a major fan fiction site, has been taken offline for maintenance, with its operator now estimating recovery could take around two weeks or as long as four. The extended outage affects a large community of writers and readers, though the site may return sooner in a limited state.
The Organization for Transformative Works says no data has been deleted and it does not believe any was taken; it also says AO3 does not collect real names and donor records are stored separately. The cause remains unclear, and the site will stay offline while an investigation continues. The nonprofit’s engineers are volunteers, which may affect how quickly repairs are completed.
In short
- AO3 could be offline for up to four weeks.
- Its operator says no data was deleted or is believed to have been taken.
- The cause remains under investigation.
