Federico Chiesa has said he wants "a new chapter" at Liverpool under incoming head coach Andoni Iraola, after a frustrating two seasons of limited playing time under Arne Slot. The Italian forward, who scored in Liverpool's 4-2 pre-season friendly win over Sunderland in Nashville, also argued that the club were fortunate to secure Champions League qualification last season, saying Liverpool's stature demands better than a battle for fifth place.

Chiesa made 36 appearances under Slot last season but started just five, including only one in the Premier League, despite injury problems for Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitiké; his last start came in the FA Cup against Brighton on 14 February. The 28-year-old, who has two years left on his contract and has been linked with a move to Como or former club Juventus, said he has not yet discussed his future with Iraola beyond talk of pressing and tactics, but was deployed as a striker against Sunderland and remains focused on earning a role at Liverpool. He also called for the club to go further in next season's Champions League after their exit to PSG, and to improve on last term's Premier League title defence.
