First Derry goal worth the wait for final hero Burns
Darragh Burns scored his first goal for Derry City to secure a 1-0 win over Waterford in the FAI Cup final. His 69th-minute strike earned Derry a seventh cup triumph and gave the club a trophy after a difficult season.
Burns, who joined in July, scored just before he was due to be substituted. Captain Michael Duffy said lifting the cup was the best feeling of his football career; Derry finished fifth in the league after manager Tiernan Lynch left in August. The victory also brings qualification for the 2027-28 Europa League.
In short
- Burns’ first Derry goal won the FAI Cup final.
- Derry beat Waterford 1-0 at the Aviva Stadium.
- The win secures Europa League qualification for 2027-28.
