Round Ethernet cables are more dependable for long or demanding home network runs
Flat Ethernet cables can make home network wiring easier to hide, but round cables are generally the more reliable choice. The distinction matters most for long runs or setups where a fast, stable connection is essential.
Both shapes can perform similarly when rated for the same speed and used in ideal conditions. Flat cables lay their twisted wire pairs in a line, are less likely to have shielding and often use thinner wires, which can increase interference, signal loss over distance and the risk of damage when bent or compressed. They can still suit short runs or tight spaces, such as under a door, if their limitations are considered.
- Round Ethernet cables are usually more reliable.
- Flat cables can be useful in tight spaces.
- Long runs and repeated bending raise the risks.
