A former college soccer player has been found dead in the water off La Jolla Shores Beach in San Diego, one of the United States' wealthiest coastal communities, prompting an investigation by local authorities into the circumstances of her death. The discovery has drawn attention both because of Bryn Waite's athletic background and the affluent setting in which the incident occurred, though the cause of death has not yet been determined.

Emergency crews were called to the scene at around 9.30am on Wednesday after reports of an unresponsive person floating in shallow water, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office. The 26-year-old woman, identified as Waite, was pronounced dead at the scene, which was located near the Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Pier. Investigators have not yet released further details on what led to her death.
